The elderly members of Mysore Sports Club, especially the ladies, are a distraught lot following a “government order” banning the playing of cards in clubs.
Mary Cariappa, an elderly member of the Club, stated in a letter that the aged members, who availed membership of the Club and visit it occasionally to relax with friends, spend some time to entertain themselves by playing cards and chatting, are now being prevented from playing cards, citing the government order.
“We elderly ladies play Bridge which is a brain game and sometimes play Rummy for some relaxation and a change. Most of us are retired pensioners. Where do we have money to gamble?” questioned Mary Cariappa and asked, “Why should anyone stop us from relaxing and having some simple pleasures in our old age?”
Sources in the Club, when contacted in this regard, said that though they had not received any written order from the government, the rule has been strictly imposed at the Club based on an oral instruction.
