In an impressive display of presence of mind, Srinivas, a KSRTC city bus driver yesterday averted a major tragedy at the traffic signal at Thathaiah Circle near Shanthala theatre when he ran onto the footpath to bring the bus to a grinding halt after realising that the brake in his bus had broken down.

It is reported that the Bus (KA 09 F 3378) plying on route number 94 from BEML Nagar and City Bus Stand via Ramaswamy Circle was proceeding towards City Bus Stand when the driver realised that the braking system of the bus had failed and rammed into the footpath when he could not stop the bus, thus resulting in more than 40 passengers heaving a sigh of relief.

Speaking about the incident, Srinivas said that he had no option but to bring the bus to a halt by running onto the footpath as continuing the journey with the bus in such a condition could have led to fatal accidents as the road has a thick density of traffic.

Srinivas has been driving buses for the past 30 years and has enough forethought to avert such incidents, said Manju, the conductor.

‘The brake failed when the bus approached Ramaswamy Circle and I rammed into the footpath to avoid ramming into vehicles from behind,’ said driver Srinivas.

‘I was standing near the signal when the incident occurred and rushed to take the driver to task. But on learning about the incident, I felt happy that he had saved many people from getting injured,’ said an eye witness.
