The annual 6-day Suttur Jathra began this morning with the offering of maharudrabhisheka to the Gaddige of Adijagadguru Sri Shivarathreeshwara Shivayogi Mahaswamiji, founder of Sri Veerasimhasana Mahasamsthana Mutt, at 4 am by Sri Shivarathri Deshikendra Swamiji.

Later, Sri Chennabasappa Swamiji of Pattada Mutt, Anchipura, hoisted the flag at the Gaddige premises. Today being the first day of the Jathra, the inauguration of indigenous games, cricket competition and boating were held at Suttur Srikshetra. Former Minister M. Mahadev inaugurated the water sports in the presence of Sri Jnanananda Puri Swamiji of Sri Mahalakshmi Mahasamsthana Peetha, Shivagange. Speaking on the occasion, Mahadev lauded the Suttur Mutt for its contribution to the society.

After the inauguration of water sports, Cricketer G.R. Vishwanath inaugurated the cricket competition while Mysore Deputy Commissioner Dr. Ramegowda inaugurated the indigenous games and Rangoli competition and dancer Nagaraju inaugurated the sand art works at the venue. Sri Shivarathri Deshikendra Swamiji and former CFTRI Director Dr. V. Prakash were present.

Thousands of devotees from various parts of the State have thronged Suttur to participate in the festivities which is organised every year to mark the birth anniversary of Sri Shivarathreeshwara Shivayogi Mahaswamiji.

The Suttur Mutt has appointed around 150 cooks who will be preparing food for devotees visiting Suttur every day. The food is being distributed to devotees at 6 different locations. Special arrangements have been made to the visiting VIPs and other guests. It is said that around one lakh devotees will be visiting Suttur every day during the festival. This apart, the visitors will be provided with information about the festival through the information kiosks established at various locations. Heavy Police security and safety measures are in place to avoid untoward incidents.

The festival includes Car festival, Theppostava, special poojas, mass marriage, religious meet, bhajana mela, mass marriage, krishi mela, wrestling competition, cattle show, drawing competition, sports meet, cultural shows, quiz, rangoli and other competitions. The Mutt has also oragnised cultural programmes.

Later today, Krishi Mela will be inaugurated by former Minister Shobha Karandlaje while former CM H.D. Kumaraswamy will inaugurate an exhibition, Muzrai Minister Kota Srinivasa Pujari will inaugurate cultural fair and MP N. Cheluvarayaswamy will inaugurate the sound and light.
