In a tragic incident, 11 construction workers were injured when an under-construction house came crashing down at M-Block, Kuvempunagar in city yesterday afternoon.
It is reported that the incident occurred when concreting work of the second floor of an under-construction house was on at a corner site No.506/A (measuring 30X15 feet) on 3rd Main, 5th Cross, M-Block Kuvempunagar as the building came down like a pack of cards.
The injured have been identified as N.Mahesh, M.Mahesh, Basappa, Rajanna, Rajesh and Shivaraju who have been admitted to nearby Bhanavi hospital while other injured Shiva Kumar, Kumar, Mahesh, and Bheema were treated as out-patients at Aravinda Nursing home in Aravindanagar.
MCC Zone 3 Development officer Govindappa has said that said site had been allotted to one N. Majunath, a resident of Ashoknagar in Mandya and added that Manjunath had obtained license to construct the house in February. While the contractor of the ill-fated building is identified as Narayana Swamy, Manjunath is the supervisor(Mestri).
MCC Zone 3 Assistant Commissioner V.R. Shylaja said that license had been issued for construction of a G plus type of house (Ground floor and the first floor), but another room was being built in violation of the norms and added that a notice will be served to the owner before initiating action within the ambit of law. She also said that it is palpable that the work was sub-standard.
Eye-witnesses said that the incident occurred at around 1.15 pm when the workers were building a room on the terrace of the first floor and the roof tilted to its left before crashing.
Fire brigade personnel, assisted by the Kuvempunagar Police and gangmen of MCC with the help of two earth movers cleared the debris and the CESC disconnected power supply to the area to enable rescue works. Owner and engineer of the collapsed building, who were arrested along with the supervisor were subsequently released on bail.
MLA M.K. Somashekar, Regional Fire Officer C.Basavanna, Assistant Commissioner of Mysore Sub-Division Basavaraj, Tahsildar Naveen Joseph, MCC Additional Commissioner N.Raju, K.R. Sub-Division ACP A.N.Prakash Gowda, Kuvempunagar Inspector K.N.Yashwanth Kumar supervised rescue operations.
Shoddy work alleged
Meanwhile, engineers of Mysore City Corporation (MCC) said that the building collapsed as it could not withstand the weight of the beam on the first floor of the building as the supporting walls of the building were weak and were built with a single line of bricks. They also attributed the collapse to poor planning.
Brave woman rescues trapped worker
In a daring display of humanitarian concerns and courage, a woman residing opposite the collapsed building saved a worker who was struggling after being trapped under the debris of the collapsed house.
The woman has been identified as Roopa Sampath Kumar, who told Star of Mysore that she heard a loud noise and a cloud of dust while she was treating guests at her house. “On hearing the sound I rushed out of the house and saw a worker caught under the debris and pulled him out.” she recalled.
Meanwhile, supervisor Manjunath and worker Rajanna, who had a narrow escape in the tragedy opined that a little delay in the collapse would have led to loss of lives.
They recalled that the tragedy was averted as they along with 19 others were waiting to be served the food brought to the site by a caterer which helped. many jump to safety.
